The Romans were one of the first cultures to use concrete and created vaults in their unique Roman architectural styles.

The plan and style borrowed heavily from Hellenistic Architecture and involved building the structure into the side of a mountain. The sanctuary would be located at the top of the structure. The material used to create the structure was Roman concrete which was a new versatile building material compared to rubble or stone.
