Sanctuary of Fortuna
Background
The Sanctuary of Fortuna was a major Roman structures built during the period of the Roman Republic around 200 BCE. The structure was made of tufa, concrete, limestone and praeneste. The structure is significant because it shows an adoption of Greek Architecture however, with some unique Roman innovations. The Romans were one of the first cultures to use concrete and created vaults in their unique Roman architectural styles.
The plan and style borrowed heavily from Hellenistic Architecture and involved building the structure into the side of a mountain. The sanctuary would be located at the top of the structure. The structure had a lot of Roman features such as surprise or unfolding architecture and ramps with rounded elements. The material used to create the structure was Roman concrete which was a new versatile building material compared to rubble or stone.
