Necropolis

Necropolis, also known as City of the Dead were structures located outside of Etruscan towns that housed their dead ancestors. Over time they came to be huge areas that were connected by streets orthogonally. There were usually two types of tombs, one was a rectangular box tomb cut into the bedrock usually for the poor and the other was known as a tumulus or tumuli and was used for wealthy or elite burials. The stratification of the wealthy and the poor in death shows there was class distinctions in Etruscan society while they were alive.

These cities of the dead were highly representative of Etruscan settlements. These tombs are being used by modern archaeologists to provide information about the city planning and domestic architecture of the ancient Etruscans.
