Marcus Aurelius

Roman History - Roman Emperors Decoration

Background

– Marcus Aurelius. His joint reign with Lucius Verus was marked by constant rebellions, invasions, and plague. He attempted to reassert Roman dominance in northern Europe. When Lucius Verus died after campaigning in the East, Marcus Aurelius assumed control as sole Emperor– Student of Greek stoic philosophy, wrote Meditations which is currently one of the most famous books written and followed by modern people such as General Mattis– Was a brilliant ruler who combined government rule with military strategy and is considered the closest human representation to Plato's idea of the “Philosopher King” that he put forth in The Republic.– Spawned and made his successor Commodus who might possibly be one of the most arrogant and incompetent Roman Emperors to grace the stage.
